The Yahoo! team was out in full effect for this year’s White House Correspondents' Dinner (WHCD), one of the hottest annual tickets in D.C. that helps raise over $100,000 in scholarships (read more about the scholarships and White House Correspondents Association here). The dinner, affectionately known as the "nerd prom,” draws a wide cross section of movers and shakers from the worlds of journalism, politics, and Hollywood, all coming together for one night to help shine the spotlight on the next generation of journalists. The weekend offered a chance to highlight the impressive work of our incredible Yahoo! News team and share our ongoing commitment to covering the events, policies and people in DC who influence our country and our world.
Our Yahoo! #NerdProm weekend kicked off with a cocktail reception just before the WHCD, which we co-hosted with ABC News and Univision. On a picture-perfect spring evening in D.C., more than 700 guests attended the cocktail reception, including Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere of ABC’s Nashville, Kerry Washington of ABC’s Scandal, John Oliver of The Daily Show, and Arianna Huffington of The Huffington Post.
The crowd then moved in for the main event. The dinner, hosted by Conan O’Brien, featured hilarious remarks by President Obama (check out full coverage on Yahoo! News here). Later in the evening, WHCA president Ed Henry even referenced a memorable story by our very own Rachel Rose Hartman about covering the White House as a new mom. Our Yahoo! News team -- including Olivier Knox (Yahoo!’s Chief Washington Correspondent) -- attended the event in full force, joined by members of our executive staff including Henrique de Castro (Yahoo! Chief Operating Officer), Kathy Savitt (Yahoo! Chief Marketing Officer), Jackie Reses (Yahoo! Chief Development Officer), Ron Bell (Yahoo! General Counsel), and Adam Cahan (Yahoo! Sr. VP Mobile & Emerging Products). We were thrilled to be joined at our tables by Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Caitlin Hayden (Spokeswoman, National Security Council), Edwin Donovan (Deputy Assistant Director of the U.S. Secret Service), and Michael Huerta (Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration).
We capped the weekend off with a Sunday morning brunch co-hosted with Thomson Reuters. Bravo TV “Top Chef” cast members -- including Bryan Voltaggio, Bart Vandaele, Spike Mendelsohn, and Mike Isabella -- prepared simply outstanding food for about 400 hungry guests.
We had a blast painting #NerdProm 2013 purple this year, highlighting the work of our Yahoo! News team and celebrating with friends from around the country and the world. We’re already looking forward to #NerdProm 2014!
