Yahoo! commends Chairman Leahy, Senator Lee, and the members of the Senate Judiciary Committee on the passage of the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) Amendments Act (S.607). This bipartisan bill updates ECPA to require U.S. law enforcement agencies to uniformly apply a warrant standard to all private electronic communications and other online documents, regardless of how old the communication is or where it is stored. With the rapid advances in technology our industry has experienced over the past decade, this common sense bill modernizes ECPA and brings it in line with our users' expectations of privacy.

We were pleased to join nearly 100 other tech companies, industry associations, and members of the advocacy community to voice our support for Chairman Leahy and Senator Lee’s ECPA Amendments Act. You can read the letter that the companies sent to Senators Leahy and Grassley here.

With an estimated 70 million people using the internet in the Middle East and an additional 50 million expected to come online in the next three years, the Arabic speaking region is very important to Yahoo! That’s why we invested in the Yahoo! Maktoob portal nearly three years ago, and why we’re entering into another key partnership today – with pioneering Arab startup Yamli.

Yahoo! Maktoob is licensing Yamli’s transliteration engine for its new Arabize Me site (or “3arrebni” in Arabic), and over the coming months we’ll be extending and integrating the engine tightly across Yahoo! Messenger, Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Search and more.

So what does Yamli’s technology exactly do?

Yamli has created an innovative “Smart Arabic Keyboard,” which lets people type Arabic characters without an Arabic keyboard. It does this by instantaneously converting words typed with Latin characters into their closest Arabic equivalents. With more than 3.5 billion words typed using Yamli to date, at a rate of 150
